Patient Portal Popular with Neighborhood Health Center patients

A growing number of Neighborhood Health Center (NHC) patients are discovering the benefits of enrolling in the patient portal.

The MyChart portal was launched soon after NHC opened its 10th Street Clinic location in 2018. Today, more than half the center’s patients are using the portal to view test results, schedule appointments, seek prescription refills or even pay bills. “MyChart offers a variety of benefits to our patients,” said Sarah Strait, Quality/OCHIN Site Specialist at the center.

Signup information is shared regularly with patients when they are in the office, she said. Patients have different options for the process, including having an activation code sent directly to a patient’s smart phone. “Using the code will walk the patient through the process of downloading the MyChart application and creating an account on their device.”

The code can also be shared by email if a patient prefers to set up their application on a computer in their home.

Strait said the portal application proved quite valuable during the COVID pandemic. “NHC was able to

continue to provide patient care with telemedicine visits through MyChart. These visits allow the patient

to have a video conference with their provider in the comfort and safety of their own home.” She said

video visits helped protect both patients and staff as everyone worked through the risks of COVID.

Even as COVID numbers seem to be going down, Strait said telemedicine visits remain popular. “Patients like the convenience that telemedicine offers. The prescription refill request feature is great for patients who may work during normal business hours of the clinic. Patients can use MyChart any time to request a prescription refill.”

The test results feature, which notifies patients when results are in, allows patients to be more directly engaged in their care. “We anticipate more of our patients will discover the ease and convenience of using the patient portal.”
